Origin of Koh Lipe

Lipe island was first discovered by the Chao Ley (or Sea Gypsies) who would travel from island to island in search of the best fishing in the areas to feed themselves and their tribes. The Chao Ley eventually found a permanent home on Koh Lipe and were given a grant to settle on the island's eastern beach (Koh Lipe Sunrise Beach) and have since remained there.

Translated into the local Chao Ley language, Koh Lipe literally means "Island Paper, or Paper Island." It is still considered by many an undiscovered secret in Thailand, one of the few remaining as Thailand tourism booms at record levels.

Involvement
The development of tourism in Koh Lipe  have drive the economic  at the local area and enhance the living standard of Chao Ley.

Chao Ley is involve in tourism sector by provide local transport service. Motor with basket beside being use for sending travelers. Young travelers can experience something new, while older can recall their younger time.

Chao Ley are experience in sea travel, they know the exactly place for snorkeling. Travelers can communicate with Chao Ley for drive them to snorkeling or take ride to nearby island.


The development of tourism in Koh Lipe is a new economic resource to the island, but if precautions are not taken in the early days of expansion, over time this industry may negatively affect the island environment and Chao Ley comminity.


With the annual increase in tourism, some environmental concerns relating to Koh Lipe have been raised in recent years. Plastic waste has become a common complaint on many hotel booking websites and travel forums.

The development of Koh Lipe is quickened around 2010 and by’15 there were over 100 resorts on Lipe. Multi-store luxury villas now stand over Sunrise Beach. In just two years, Sunset Beach attracted a dozen new resorts. One blanketed in jungle, a large inland area is now the focus of constant construction.
